Breyer War Admiral - 1937 Triple
Crown Winner
Model:
#1189
A son of the great racehorse Man o' War, War Admiral had much to live
up to. Foaled in 1934, he was a small, plain brown colt without a speck
of white that matured to just a shade above 15.2 hands. But as they
say, good things come in small packages. Though Samuel J. Riddle, War
Admiral's owner, felt that the timing of the ten-furlong distance of
the Kentucky Derby came too early in the three-year-old's career, he
allowed War Admiral to enter the field anyway. Never an easy horse to
load in the starting gate, War Admiral held up the start of the Kentucky
Derby for more than eight minutes. When the break finally came, War
Admiral took the lead and held it to the end, winning the race by 1
3/4 lengths. He went on to win the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes,
capturing the prestigious Triple Crown in 1937 along with the honor
of being named Horse of the Year. But War Admiral had yet to meet the
highly touted four-year-old underdog Seabiscuit, a grandson of Man o'
War. After several attempted meetings, these two champions finally met
in the Pimlico Special on November 1, 1938, a match race that has gone
done in the history books as one of the greatest of all time. Battered
by the Great Depression, people looked to racing to take their minds
off their troubles. War Admiral went off heavily favored in the betting.
But Seabiscuit broke cleanly ahead of War Admiral and never looked back,
winning the race by four lengths and stunning the Admiral's fans. In
2003, Universal Pictures, DreamWorks Pictures and Spyglass Entertainment,
brings Seabiscuit to the big screen. Based on the best-selling book,
Seabiscuit: An American Legend by Laura Hillenbrand, the film is an
American epic of triumph and perseverance set during the Great Depression.
Starring Tobey Maquire, Chris Cooper, and Jeff Bridges, the film takes
you on the ride of a lifetime just as Seabiscuit and War Admiral
did for the entire Nation at a time when they needed it most.
